Playing God: Mary must die so Jodie may live longer.

چکیده
In 2000, conjoined twins were born in England. What made this case unique was the fact that if the twins remained unseparated, medical opinion held they would die; if they were separated one twin would live, and one twin would die; the parents refused to consent to separation; and the hospital charged with their care brought the matter to court. The trial court and court of appeal approved of the surgery, which was promptly performed, resulting in the immediate death of the weaker twin. The author argues that there is no justification in law or morality for the courts' decisions, and that, in fact, the courts' decisions over-rule prior precedent and effectively divorced law from morality.

“Everyone has the right to life so why should we kill one of our daughters to enable the other to survive?”* That question by the parents of conjoined twins, Mary and Jodie, who were so fused that any attempt to separate them would inevitably result in the death of Mary, stands as a challenge not only to their caregivers at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester, England, but to all who confronted th...

The emergent new science of synthetic biology is challenging entrenched distinctions between, amongst others, life and non-life, the natural and the artificial, the evolved and the designed, and even the material and the informational. Whenever such culturally sanctioned boundaries are breached, researchers are inevitably accused of playing God or treading in Frankenstein's footsteps. Bioethici...

متن کاملBig mice die young but large animals live longer
It has been known for millennia that large animals live longer, inspiring numerous theories of aging. For example, elephants and humans live longer than mice, which in turn live longer than worms and flies. The correlation is not perfect, with many explainable exceptions, but it is still obvious. In contrast, within each species (e.g., mice and some other mammals) small body size is associated ...
متن کاملWater, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.
We put “nutrient” in quote because, technically, water is devoid of any nutrition. It has no carbs, proteins, or fat, and no calories. There are no vitamins or minerals, just two hydrogen atoms clinging to one oxygen atom. Yet this simple molecule is designed by our God to sustain all life and promote metabolism. Your body is comprised of 70-80% water, and 80% of people on this planet live clos...
